Now, let’s talk about diamond cutting tools. There are two main types: natural diamond and synthetic diamond. Natural diamond is the hardest material on Earth, but it’s also very expensive and not always practical for industrial machining. Synthetic diamond, on the other hand, is more affordable and can be produced in large quantities.
Poly – crystalline diamond (PCD) is a popular type of synthetic diamond tool. It’s made by sintering diamond particles together under high pressure and temperature. PCD tools are excellent for machining non – ferrous metals like aluminum and copper, as well as some non – metallic materials like plastics and composites. They have a very long tool life and can achieve extremely fine surface finishes.
I’ve used PCD drills for making holes in aluminum parts. The drills cut through the material like a hot knife through butter, and the holes are always straight and precise. The only thing is, you need to be careful when using diamond tools on ferrous materials because diamond reacts with iron at high temperatures, which can cause the tool to wear out quickly.
Ceramic cutting tools are also worth mentioning. They’re made from materials like alumina and silicon nitride. Ceramic tools are known for their high hardness and chemical stability. They can run at very high cutting speeds, which means you can finish a job faster.
I once had a project where we had to machine a large number of cast iron components. By using ceramic inserts, we were able to increase our cutting speed by almost 50% compared to traditional carbide tools. However, ceramic tools are quite brittle, so you need to have a stable machining setup and feed the tool carefully. Otherwise, it can break easily.
When it comes to choosing the right cutting tool for machining hard materials, there are a few things to consider. First of all, you need to know the properties of the material you’re cutting. Is it a ferrous or non – ferrous metal? How hard is it? What’s its chemical composition?
The type of machining operation also matters. Are you turning, milling, drilling, or grinding? Different operations require different types of tools. For example, if you’re turning a hardened steel shaft, a carbide insert or a CBN insert might be your best bet. But if you’re milling a complex shape on a titanium part, you might need a carbide end mill or a PCD milling cutter.
Cost is another important factor. As I mentioned earlier, some tools like CBN and diamond are more expensive, but they can save you money in the long run by reducing tool change time and improving productivity. You need to weigh the upfront cost against the long – term benefits.
