However, cold working can induce a phase transformation in austenitic stainless steel. When austenitic stainless steel is cold – worked, some of the austenite can transform into martensite, which is magnetic. So, a cold – rolled 304 stainless steel coil may show some magnetic properties due to this phase transformation.

Ferritic Stainless Steel

Ferritic stainless steel contains less nickel (usually less than 1%) and has a body – centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure. The BCC structure allows for a net magnetic moment, making ferritic stainless steel magnetic. Ferritic stainless steels are commonly used in applications where corrosion resistance and magnetic properties are both required, such as in automotive exhaust systems.

Martensitic Stainless Steel

Martensitic stainless steel is also magnetic. It has a different crystal structure compared to austenitic and ferritic stainless steels. Martensitic stainless steel is hard and can be heat – treated to achieve high strength. It contains a relatively high amount of carbon, which contributes to its magnetic properties. Martensitic stainless steel is often used in cutlery and surgical instruments.
